Ready to hit the road? For you the most beautiful places to visit in 2023

The magazine TIME has compiled the World’s Greatest Places 2023, the list of the most beautiful places to visit this year. At last, after many years of downturn, the tourism industry is recovering, with travelers around the world looking for distraction and fun.

In addition, the magazine TIME featured the destinations that also offered the most attention to sustainability, a new focus of travelers, as well as exotic destinations and those that are committed to the preservation of their land.

In the list we find places and cities of art as well as pristine nature reserves and much more. We would like to propose some of the most beautiful locations presented by the magazine, undoubtedly the most striking and, in any case, special for some reason.

Naples (Italy)
'See Naples and then die', goes a famous Italian saying. Obviously not to be taken literally, it is meant that seeing the beauty of the city in Campania is worth a lifetime, and TIME recognises this value. A city of art, love and passion, it has inspired the greatest artists in Western history. The official Neapolitan tourism website points out that 'Naples holds the record for being the largest UNESCO heritage city centre in Europe, countless monuments from different eras, streets and alleyways full of history and tradition, breathtaking views, a vibrant nightlife, excellent cuisine unparalleled in the world, and a theatrical, unique and original lifestyle'.

Budapest (Hungary)
Hungary's capital city sits on both banks of the Danube, and offers a magnificent and unforgettable experience at all times of the year. The attractions and historical monuments are really interesting, the bars and pubs for entertainment offer both underground and more classic venues. What's more, the Hungarian city is home to some of the largest, most beautiful and busiest spas in the world. Stunning city from above at sunset, when its magnificent Baroque, neoclassical, art nouveau palaces are expertly illuminated and give an even more magical atmosphere to the city.

Medellin (Colombia)
Colombia's capital city, infamous in the past as the world capital of South American drug trafficking, has undergone a thorough renovation in recent decades that has brought it into the elite of the world's places to visit. The city rises from the valley of Aburrám and its natural beauty makes it ideal for hiking, horseback riding and zipline adventures. Traverse the stunning jungle to Piedra de Penol, and then go all the way to the top by climbing the 740 steps: journey within a journey, providing memorable views.

Chyulu Hills (Kenya)
This is a protected natural area in Kenya established in 1983 that covers the mountain range of the same name. It is located in southern Kenya about 200 km southeast of Nairobi. Within the park there is the Chyulu Hills Forest, a 32,000-hectare area of biodiversity. In 2010 the complex consisting of Tsavo and Chyulu Hills National Parks were proposed as a World Heritage Site protected by UNESCO. The proposal is still under consideration.

Kyoto (Japan)
Kyoto was the country's capital for more than a millennium (precisely from 794 to 1868) and is known as "the city of a thousand temples." It is something of a testament to Japan's culture, as it was untouched by the devastation of World War II. The shrine in Shimogamo dates back to the 6th century and seems to stand still in time, with a peace and spiritual energy that can still be touched and felt. Also wonderful is the shrine of Fushimi Inari and then also the life-size statues of Kannon with a thousand arms in the temple of Sanjūsangen-dō.

Barcelona (Spain)
Barcelona is one of the liveliest and youngest cities in Europe. Work on the Sagrada Familia is proceeding apace, with the two towers of evangelists Luke and Mark joining the tower of the Virgin Mary, completed in 2021. At the end of 2023, the towers of Evangelists John and Matthew will join the other pinnacles to illuminate the city during the Christmas season. In addition, this year also marks the 50th anniversary of the death of painter Pablo Picasso, with exhibitions and events throughout the city.

Ollantaytambo (Peru)
Located about 70 km from Cusco, it is a real Inca fortress, whose name means Inn of Ollantay (the name of a warrior). At the foot of this fortress is a small town, the departure station for the train to Aguas Calientes, the last outpost before ascending to Machu Picchu. The preservation of this place is fundamental to Peruvian and South American culture in general, for which enormous attention is paid to security.

Pantelleria (Italy)
This island, located in the Mediterranean Sea halfway between Sicily and Tunisia, is fast gaining worldwide attention for its pristine sea and beaches, a perfect place to relax and explore nature by bicycle or scooter. The beaches do not have sand, but pebbles and rocks, but it is a wonderful place to do snorkeling. The cuisine, typically of freshly caught and very fresh seafood, would already be a reason to give it a thought.

Its seaside resorts are popular with lovers of windsurfing and other water sports.
